Overview

Champs Burgers, nestled at 1234 SE Cora St in Portland, stands out as a beacon for those craving an authentic American burger experience. This small, unassuming cart behind a tiny brewery offers more than just food—it delivers a genuine connection between quality craft and community spirit.

The star here is undeniably the smash burger. Every patty is seared to perfection, achieving that coveted crispy edge while maintaining juicy tenderness inside. The buns, made in-house with care, melt effortlessly on the tongue and complement the dry-aged beef beautifully. Customers consistently praise the harmony of meat and cheese, with a sauce that ties everything without overpowering. From classic builds to options with a spicy crunch, like jalapeños, Champs masterfully balances tradition and subtle innovation.

Beyond the burger itself, the fries cooked in beef tallow are remarkably addictive—a true highlight that pairs excellently with a cold beer from the neighboring brewery. The experience transcends just eating; it’s about sitting at the counter where the owners engage with guests, making each visit memorable. This attentiveness builds an intimate, welcoming environment ideal for locals or visitors seeking genuine flavors without pretension.

The location, while charming, comes with the challenge of limited parking, making it a perfect stop for neighborhood residents, bikers, or those willing to stroll over to this culinary gem. The cart's compact space channels a sense of authenticity and focus, reflecting the passion poured into every burger.

For anyone wanting a fresh, handcrafted American burger with attention to detail and local ingredients, Champs Burgers is an essential visit in Portland’s vibrant food scene. Whether you're a longtime burger fan or someone discovering their love for this classic dish, Champs offers a simple yet profound dining experience that invites you to return again and again.

Best burger I’ve had in Portland in a long time. I got the Champ single, it was so good I didn’t want to finish it. The owners are there, running the cart, having chats with almost every patron. Buns made in house. Excellent tasting burger. Not that you need to modify this burger, but if I could (idk if you can) I’d get extra pickles. Also I’m a sucker for a classic burger with all the veg, I’d come back just to try if they did it. Anyway, come check it out. I’ll be back. #LBC

The burger was PERFECT. Crispy on the edges, great meat and cheese ratio, burger sauce on point. Got mine with jalapeños and they were crunchy and spicy. The bun practically melted in my mouth. Fries were crispy and equally delicious. The guys are the counter were super friendly and obviously cared about making everyone happy. 10/10 experience.

As someone who never used to crave burgers, champs is an anomaly. I am gluten “sensitive” (to processed gluten and only get an upset stomach, nothing too serious) and the home made buns never hurt my tummy. The beef itself is incredible and I never feel a rock sitting in my gut. And the beef tallow fries are quite literally heaven. Get a beer while you wait!

I don't usually rate a place before I have visited at least 3 times but I'm making an exception for Champs This was the best smash burger that I have ever had in Portland and one of the best burgers overall that I have had in some time Great preparation and attention to detail with a soft fresh-baked-tasting bun made this stop special in the short time I had there The atmosphere was exactly what you would expect for a cart out back of a tiny brewery The biggest drawback is the complete lack of parking If you live in this neighborhood or are on a bike, visit this joint ASAP If you find yourself nearby and can walk over, check it out, sez me!

Hands down the best burgers in Portland. These guys make everything by hand and with the best local ingredients; you just won’t find that level of dedication anywhere else. Dry aged beef, beef tallow fries, buns made from scratch… they do it all!

Hands down the best in Portland Oregon. The burgers will have you finding the owners parents and thanking them for conceiving. The buns are dialed perfectly, the ratios and meat is amazing. If you actually care for quality food while being naughty and having a burger, this is the spot.

The menu is small (burgers fries and cookies) but everything is delicious and made in house. The beef tallow fries are the best I’ve had in Portland! Champs’ food cart is behind Away Days Brewery. The outdoor area is cute and they play soccer matches on the projector outside.

Before I moved, my normal burger place was the bar where Alton Brown named it best burger in the United States, So, when we moved here a few months ago, my priority was finding the best burger here. After many, many, many Portland burgers, I have found the most delicious burger in all of Portland. Champ knocks it out of the park.
